Course Overview

Gain the skills and knowledge you need in chemical safety and handling obtaining your Chemical User accreditation.

This 3-day skillset describes the skills and knowledge required to transport, handle, store, prepare and apply chemicals and includes theory and practical components.

Please wear workplace-appropriate clothing including long sleeves and trousers and enclosed shoes.

Course Description

SA Health requires training in order to purchase agricultural chemicals that are Schedule 7 poisons.

Persons using Schedule 7 poisons (labelled as Dangerous Poison) are required to hold a valid statement of attainment issued by a training organisation registered by the Australian Skills Quality Authority for the units of competence AHCCHM307 (Prepare and apply chemicals to control pests, weeds and diseases) and AHCCHM304 (Transport and store chemicals).

Persons spraying specified Group 4 herbicides are required to hold a statement of attainment for AHCCHM307.

Over this 3 day skillset you will learn how to prepare and apply agricultural chemicals as well as how to safely handle, transport and store them.

You’ll also learn how to determine weather conditions suitable for spraying and manage chemical residues, as well as equipment calibration techniques and the knowledge required to limit spray drift. You’ll also develop an understanding of chemical application issues, how to undertake risk assessments and record keeping requirements, as well as how to complete hazard control forms and undertake self-audit and compliance checklists.

SA WorkReady

This Skill Set is available as a subsidised course only for students enrolled in a full qualification under WorkReady funding.

All other participants will be charged under a fee-for-service arrangement at the advertised rate. These participants should be aware that they will be in a class with students enrolled in a Traineeship/Apprenticeship with ARO College.

Outcomes

  • A Statement of Attainment certificate for the 2 units from the AHCSS0074 skillset:
    • You will receive a print copy and a digital version of the certificate.
    • Each version of your certificate contains a QR Code which can be used to validate your credentials.

Entry Requirements

Upfront Assessment of Need (UAN)

To ensure Participants receive the support they need to successfully complete the skillset, an upfront assessment of need (UAN) process is undertaken before enrolment is confirmed. The UAN process includes an assessment of the participant’s suitability, support needs and literacy and numeracy capabilities via a Language Literacy and Numeracy assessment (LLN).

 

Employment

Employment is not a pre-requisite for this skillset.

 

Personal

All applicants into this skillset will need to be over 18 years of age, and provide:

  • A Unique Student Identifier #
  • An active personal email address
  • Government-issued photo identification inclusive of Date of Birth

Course Delivery

Blended:

Over the 3 concurrent days of the Workshop, there will be a mix of classroom training and assessment activities and outside, simulated practical training and assessment tasks.

At the commencement of the course, participants will receive a detailed session plan.

Participants must be prompt at the commencement of each day.

Assessment

There are multiple assessment tasks that Participants must achieve a satisfactory result in to be deemed competent in each unit of competency. These are run at various intervals over the 3 days so attendance for the full 3 days is required.

AHCCHM304

Written questions – This Task requires Candidates to write the answers to 20 questions related to the knowledge requirements of the Unit of Competency.

Project – This Task requires Candidates to undertake self-directed research to complete a 4-part activity related to safely handling, transporting and storing chemicals.

Observation/demonstration – This Task requires Candidates to undertake an assessment of their skills and abilities to safely handle, transport and store chemicals for use in the Agriculture industry, to legislative and regulatory requirements.

AHCCHM307

Written questions – This Task requires Candidates to write the answers to 49 questions related to the knowledge requirements of the Unit of Competency.

Project – This Task requires Candidates to undertake self-directed research to complete a 7-part activity related to the preparation, application, transport and storage of chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases.

Observation/demonstration – This Task requires Candidates to undertake an assessment of their skills and abilities to safely transport, store, prepare and apply chemicals for use in the Agriculture industry, to legislative and regulatory requirements.
