Christine Pettall

Specialist Horticulture and Frontline Management Trainer


Christine has worked in the horticulture industry for over 40 years. She began her career at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, as a trainee completing a 4 year apprenticeship alongside many great horticulturalists.

Christine has completed a Bachelor of Teaching (Education & Training of Adults),working in almost every role possible in the Vocational Training realm. She has widespread experience in a number of government departments and other Registered Training Organisations as; an Educational Manager, a Trainer/Assessor, a Project Manager, an Auditor, an Administrator and as a Consultant. Christine is a key element in the ARO’s ability to function as a well organised and knowledgeable training organisation.

Christine has a versatile teaching approach and is able to adjust her methods to suit the student, employers or class. She is always in demand as a trainer/assessor. Many of her students and employers that have had her train their staff speak highly of her expertise and flexible approach.

(Qualifications: Bachelor of Teaching (Education & Training Adults), Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Advanced Diploma of Horticulture,  Certificate IV in Frontline Management, qualifications in Permaculture and a number of other relevant courses and workshops.)

Scott Findlay

Specialist Horticulture and Landscape Trainer


Scott Findlay has been working in the horticulture industry for over 25 years.

He started his career as a landscape gardener in 1986; in his initial period he was placed in a wide variety of roles and within 4 years was supervising major projects, and was considered young in the industry. Scott overcame those age barriers and continued to demonstrate his outstanding leadership and ability over the next 11 years.

Scott gained his training certificate in 2003 and began his work as a trainer with us here at ARO. He continues to develop his skills by not only networking with large numbers of industry contacts to keep abreast of the latest developments, but also by undertaking study himself to further his range of teaching.

Scott enjoys attending various professional conferences and displays around Australia, in particular the Landscape show in Sydney; he is also a current member in both professional bodies ‘Nursery and Landscape Association’ and ‘Turf Association – Australian Golf Course Superintendents’ Association (AGCSA)’.

Scott is known to translate theory to practice well and students always speak highly of his down to earth nature and ability to relate to all individuals.

Beady Kunz

Specialist Horticulture Trainer


Beady Kunz has worked in the horticulture industry for over 35 years. She grew up on a farm in Ontario Canada where her love for nature and conservation started. She received her diploma in Horticulture at Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology and started her career working in greenhouses and nurseries. She started her own successful landscaping business and decided to return to study in the field of Agriculture where she received an associate diploma in Agriculture at the University of Guelph.

After graduating from Guelph University, an opportunity to volunteer overseas came up and Beady spent the next four years in Israel as a gardener and project manager for the construction of greenhouses which would produce plants for the world famous Baha’i gardens in Haifa and Akko. In Israel, Beady met her Australian husband and together they travelled the world before settling in Port Willunga SA.

After arriving in Australia, Beady continued her study and received a Diploma in Urban Park Management through TAFE while working for local councils as a horticulturist, team leader of a tree gang, supervisor of 25 staff in horticulture maintenance and mowing and technical officer of open space and planning. While working at a local council Beady trained staff in the safe operation of machinery and equipment which led to her current position as a trainer assessor.

Kevin Knowles

Specialist Horticulture Trainer


Since 2006 Kevin has been extensively involved in all aspects of pest management. As a self-employed Pest Control Technician for Practical Pest Management, his knowledge of hazardous chemicals is comprehensive and Kevin’s experience in the handling of these materials is equally comprehensive.This gives Kevin a great background to train students in our ARO SafeChem Course along with many other units relating to hazardous chemical uses and control.

Prior to 2006 Kevin spent 19 years working for the Tea Tree Gully Council as a Horticulture Support officer, Pest Control officer and Local Authorised officer (Natural Resource Management).

Kevin taught five groups of students at Elizabeth in Certificate II in Horticulture and saw quite a number of them progress into Certificate III in Horticulture and gain decent employment in the industry. Kevin has great patience with his students at ARO and shows a high level of professionalism in all aspects of his work.

(Qualifications: Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Diploma of Arboriculture, Certificate III in Horticulture (Gardening), licences in; Domestic and Commercial Pest Management, Weed Control and Vertebrate Pest Control.)  

Alan Wilton

Specialist Horticulture Trainer


Alan originally started his horticulture career in England in 1968, working and studying at the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew in London; where he spent four years on a Diploma in Horticulture apprenticeship.

He worked as a freelance gardener in the U.K. for several  years before coming to South Australia where he worked as a senior gardener for Mt lofty Botanical gardens and then eventually for the Enfield City Council as a Supervisor in the Tree Gang.

He began training shortly after beginning in the Tree Gang and while training kept up-to-date working as a freelance Arboriculturalist & horticultural consultant, whilst training many new and experienced horticulture students.

Alan has significant of experience both in Australia and overseas making him a great asset for the development of the resources and training materials for majority of our horticulture programs.

(Qualifications: Diploma in Horticulture R B G Kew, Dip in Horticulture  (Arboriculture), Certificate IV in Frontline Management, Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace training, and Senior First Aid.)

Andrew Nooteboom

Specialist Horticulture Trainer

After leaving high school Andrew went to Teachers college, but had a passion for being out in the garden. Soon he started his career in the horticulture industry as a self-employed landscape gardener, taking on various roles of gardening, landscaping, garden retail and land management for over 30 years.

In 2006 Andrew travelled to Solan in northern India to teach Permaculture to farmers left in the tail end of the greening revolution. He considers this to be a huge highlight in both his career and personal life; he spent most of his time there learning new techniques and resolving problems related to helping farmers with financial difficulties; he managed to show many farmers how to improve their land with no financial outlay.

Having progressed through the horticulture industry to become a notable horticulturalist and businessman, Andrew now enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with others through training within ARO.  

(Qualifications: Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Certificate IV in Horticulture, First Aid, Certificate in Pesticide and Herbicide handling, other relevant courses and Diploma of Primary teaching.)

Robbie Jenkins

Specialist Business Trainer

Robbie is the owner and operator of ‘In the Black’ bookkeeping service. Robbie has been an exceptional entrepreneur and trainer for many years and continues to show her development skills with her students in marketing, administration, and business for small companies and for large organisations.

Along with many other achievements through her career Robbie continues to develop a diverse range of industries in Adelaide and is a great contributor to ARO and its growth in education.

(Qualifications: Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Certificate IV in Business (Property Management), Certificate I & II in Commercial Leasing, Diploma of Property, Certificate III in Business (Real Estate Corporate Support), First Aid Certificate.)

Jo Marshall

Student Administration and Finance Officer

Jo has had a background in finance and business management since the 1980s when she achieved her Diploma in Business Management. When the directors of her full time position decided to close the business, Jo started her own bookkeeping service, culminating in assisting businesses to set up their computerised accounts for GST. After several years of this, she was offered the opportunity to go to England to work and was lucky enough to become the manager of a charity for the visually impaired. This position enabled her to view the world differently, not only by working with people with a disability, but also by working with volunteers and in the community sector generally.

When Jo came back to Australia she took on various management contract positions, one of which was at The Hut Community Centre where she implemented the National Standards of Volunteering. From The Hut Jo moved to Community Centres SA as the Workforce Development and Adult Community Education Support Officer.

From gaining experience in the adult education sector Jo felt she was able to take on the Student Administration position at ARO and was also eager to get back into finance through this role. Since then she has become invaluable to the ARO administration team and has already made countless improvements to processes within the business.

As well as working at ARO, Jo teaches MYOB at The Hut Community Centre. She is a strong advocate of life-long learning and believes she can bring her strong organisational and finance skills to assist ARO to move into a different era of education.

Rod Mellor

Student Administration Officer

Rod has been involved in the training industry as a trainer and administrator for over 25 years.  He has trained in Business, Retail, Training and Assessment, as well as basic computing. He has also gained a wealth of knowledge while running his own businesses in the retail industry.

As the student administration officer Rod is responsible for the management of student enrolments into our student management system, processing qualifications, assisting the educators and ensuring all student information is accurate and up to date, he is the go-to person for student administration.

With Rod’s previous experience and understanding of the vocational training sector he contributes a great deal of knowledge and commitment to the team at ARO and is consistently assisting to grow the organisation.
